United Nations Launching Anti-Poverty Campaign in Chile

The United Nations has launched an international campaign to reduce poverty and hunger in Latin America.
The U.N. is holding a workshop called “Food Security and Education for Rural People” that began Tuesday in Santiago, Chile. The goal of the workshop is to increase educational opportunities in rural areas of Latin America, which will improve agricultural productivity.

A U.N. statement says research indicates a farmer with four years of elementary education is almost nine percent more productive than a farmer with no education. That number increases to 13 percent when those farmers have access to materials such as new seeds or farm machinery.

The world body’s Food and Agricultural Organization is organizing the workshop, along with its Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
