Salvadoran Roman Catholic Church Calls for Investigation of 1980 Slaying
Posted: Tuesday September 07, 2004 2:17 PM EST
By VOA News

The Roman Catholic Church in El Salvador is asking the current Salvadoran government for a new investigation of the 1980 assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero.

The request Saturday came a day after a U.S. judge in the U.S. state of California found a former El Salvadoran military officer liable in Archbishop Romero’s murder. He ordered retired Captain Alvaro Rafael Saravia to pay $10 million in damages for his role in the slaying.

Saravia was not present or represented for the U.S. civil lawsuit, which was filed by a human rights group.

No one has been held responsible in El Salvador for the Archbishop Romero killing, which came to symbolize death squad terror during the country’s 12-year civil war.
