Posted: Wednesday July 07, 2004 10:48 PM EST

RUSSIA—Special envoy Veniamin Popov supervising relations with the OIC declared, that rapprochement with the Islamic world serves the interests of Russia as a Eurasian country, ITAR-TASS reports. Countries - members of the Organization of Islamic conference (OIC) also welcome cooperation with Russia and consider it as a reliable political partner, he said.

According to Popov, Russia wants to conduct with the Islamic world “a peer-to-peer meaningful dialogue which is especially important now when in some circles Islam is equated to Terrorism”. “Cooperation with the community uniting 57 states develops on different directions. We go towards each other. The question is raised for Russia to join the OIC as an observer”, - the diplomat informed. He also noted, that Russia has a good base for cooperation with the OIC.

Veniamin Popov took part in the international scientific conference “Variety of cultures: experience of Russia and Levant East”. In Beirut he had a meeting with the Minister for Foreign Affairs Jean Obejd and minister of information Michael Samahaj. He also had a conversation with mufti of Lebanon sheikh Mohammed Kabbani.
