Project of а Russian Orthodox church in Havana

Cuban parliamentary presented to Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Alexy a project of a church in Havana

A Cuban Parliamentary on the instructions of Fidel Castro presented a project of а Russian Orthodox church in Havana to Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Alexy. The meeting of the Patriarch and a deputy of Cuban Parliament, historian of Havana Prof. Eusebio Leal took place in Saint Daniel’s monastery yesterday, ITAR TASS reported.

The Cuban Parliamentary presented regards from Fidel Castro to Patriarch Alexy and informed that “breaking ground for Russian Orthodox church in Havana is planned for November this year”, and the completion of construction is expected in 12 months.

Patriarch thanked Cuban leader and a deputy of Cuban Parliament for the assistance “which was provided in the matter of obtaining the land area and construction of the Russian сhurch”.

As the Secretary for inter-orthodox relations of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate archpriest Nikolay Balashov reported, “This will be the first сhurch built by Russian Orthodox Church in Cuba”. Early this year an Orthodox temple of Constantinople Patriarchate was opened on the Island of Liberty.
